hahah i knew exactly what you are saying, but we call hipsters in Belfast are nothing to what you’d get in London or New York. Mentioning that in the hipsters guide would have been unconstructive to the article. It was actually the Vancouver hipster scene that inspired me doing it, not our watered down version.

by ‘shortage of hipsters’ i’m really just trying to say that most people in Belfast are sensible, grounded and lovely. my slating of said people is mainly for (an attempt at) humourous purposes, and it’s also a small dig at Richard Crother’s Guide To Being A Hipster article. I don’t think he realised that or he wouldn’t have published this…

i do agree that this is ‘reasons why belfast is better than the unappealing side of london’ though. What I hoped however, was that from writing this i could convey a sense of how Belfast is much more of, well, a community than what i’m experiencing right now. I know I didn’t exactly express this with journalistic prowess, but it’s panicdots, not bbc news. i do appreciate the feedback though, keep commenting lads. I’m a teen with a tendancy to rant who’s in need of guidance!

I’m an exiled Belfastian and I love the city more every time i go home. i did see some hipster types tho last september, at the belfast culture night.

Probably still just rare hallions by london standards though.

good article. london can seem really intimidating and scary, especially when you have to go to all the shit gigs in shoreditch. it’s always so much nicer to be back in your own backyard. people say that there is less work available in belfast, or places to eat, or galleries to go to, museums, cinemas and other stuff like that. but so what! i love it when a random spide gobs out the window at me. wouldn’t trade it. fuck everyone else.

“reasons not to hate belfast” or “reasons why belfast is better than the unappealing side of london”? how does it compare to the other wonderful cities the world has to offer??

i was born and raised in belfast and yes, i love it. without wanting to sound harsh, i’m happier not living there. i was hoping we’d have more to offer than a shortage of “hipsters,” opportunities for big fish in small ponds, and the same people in the same bars (every week) by now. horses for courses i guess.
