After the absolute travesty that was Max Payne, I don’t think anyone was happy to hear that Mark Wahlberg had landed the much coveted, and much speculated, role of Nathan Drake for the upcoming Uncharted movie. Especially seeing as we live in a reality where Nathan Fillion exists.
Well, director David O. Russell may well have just clawed back some love from the gaming community today as he told Empire he’d be quite happy casting Scarlett Johansson in the role of Elena Fisher. Personally, I’m a little split on this one. While I recognise why she has a certain appeal to some people, I’ve yet to see her, or any of her four facial expressions, in a film where I was impressed by her performance. Let’s face it, Bill Murray was what made Lost In Translation great, SJ was just lucky to be cast in the first place.
Russell also had this to say:
“Ah, Elena. I’ve cultivated her quite a bit and I think I’ve added a lot of dimension to her so that’s all I’m going to say. I love the woman characters and the more robust they are, the more robust the movie … there’s [sic] a lot of greater [actresses] I think might suit. Hopefully, we’ll see how it works out with everybody who are being scoped to do that role…”
With filming rumoured to start shooting this Summer, we’ll no doubt be hearing more wonderful titbits from the magical land of Hollywood concerning casting, story development and the inclusion of a cuddly sidekick (I wouldn’t put it past them).
Video games very rarely make good movies, with little to no exceptions (I know I’m going to hell, but for some reason I find Wing Commander almost impossible to switch off), so while it may be looking bleak for the upcoming Uncharted movie, who would you like to see cast? And while we’re at it, maybe we’re being unfair – Wahlberg’s a decent actor, perhaps he can pull it off. Thoughts in the comments please.
