NME, MTV Europe and three time MOBO award winning rapper PROFESSOR GREEN returns to Belfast on Friday October 28th to promote his eagerly awaited sophomore LP “At Your Inconvenience” which is released on 31st October.

There are those that rap, and those that rap well; then there are those that transcend the confines of hip hop culture to become credible, commercial, mainstream pop acts – Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem, for instance. But it’s unfair to compare Professor Green to any of the aforementioned; utterly British, uniquely inimitable, if anything; his closest equivalent is Lily Allen. Littering his lyrics with wry pop culture references, a sharp sense of humour and an honesty rarely found in rap music right now, Professor Green is one of the most exciting talents to emerge in 2011.

His melody-laden rhymes and physical presence aren’t the only thing that makes Green so individual. He’s already had quite a life in 28 years; from winning battle rap competitions and being signed by Mike Skinner, to being stabbed in the neck and collaborating with Lily Allen just two months later, life had already been incredibly colourful for the rapper born Stephen Paul Manderson in Hackney in 1983.

It’s been a truly rocky road, but finally it looks like life is looking up for Green, with his long-awaited sophomore album ready to release in October.

FESTIVAL REPUBLIC & POD  presents

ELECTRIC PICNIC MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

STRADBALLY HALL, CO. LAOIS

2nd, 3rd, 4th September 2011

UNDERWORLD; BOB GELDOF; M.WARD; I AM KLOOT; FOSTER THE PEOPLE; REPUBLIC OF LOOSE; THE BLACK ANGELS; EVERYTHING EVERYTHING; NIKI & THE DOVE; THE RUBBERBANDITS;THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART; DONAL DINEEN’S PARISH;  SHARON CORR; GHOST ESTATES;

The undisputed heavyweights of electronic music, UNDERWORLD, make a very welcome return to Stradbally Hall following an awe-inspiring show back in ‘08. In the last 20 years Underworld have been providing the soundtrack for summer after summer with the likes of the colossal Born Slippy, arguably the greatest dance track ever made. Now with nine albums, the most recent Barking seeing the band perform a feat of creative regeneration once again, it is with baited breath that picnicers wait to witness what the duo will unleash this September.

One of the world’s most distinguished Irishmen and music legend, BOB GELDOF, will be treating picnicers to not only his first ever music performance at the Picnic but also to an appearance at our Spoken Word area. The verbose singer, is set to perform tracks from his extensive back catalogue  including memorable hits from his Boomtown Rats era as well as music from his latest critically acclaimed album ‘How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell.’ The album is his first in over 9 years and has already been declared ‘Album of the Year’ by BBC’s veteran DJ Bob Harris. Renowned for speaking his mind, the Picnic could not hope for a more thought provoking guest at the Spoken Word area. Having already been invited to be SXSW key note speaker and also given an unforgettable emotionally charged talk at this year’s Hay Festival, picnicers may well see another side to his didactic character.

Renowned singer-songwriter and producer extraordinaire, M. WARD, returns to Ireland for the first time in over 5 years. Known for his swooning voice and angelic guitar strumming, M.’s 2003 release, “Transfiguration of Vincent”, caught the attention of fans of future collaborators including Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Jenny Lewis, Cat Power, Gillian Welch and Jim James (My Morning Jacket). Since 2003 M. has released several critically acclaimed albums including 2005’s Transistor Radio and his 2007 breakthrough release “Post-War” .Ward is also the Him in She& Him the hugely popular collaboration with Zooey Descanel and together with Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Ward  released self-titled debut album Monsters of Folk.  Expect to be treated to songs from his current album Hold Time” which has been awarded 4 stars from Mojo & Q.

The majestic I AM KLOOT’s 2010 release Sky At Night, earned them a well deserved Mercury Prize nomination. Sky At Night saw fellow Mancunians Guy Garvey and Craig Potter from Elbow returning as producers after producing the band’s debut ‘Natural History’ and after years of being criminally ignored, the band finally got some well-deserved recognition. The Manchester trio formed in 1999 and have continuously delivered expertly-drawn, folk-inspired stories that have a lilting, melancholy to them. Album opener ‘Northern Skies’ was nominated for BBC 6Music’s Top 40 songs of 2010 poll.

FOSTER THE PEOPLE are another first at this year’s Picnic. Their debut Torches has already been touted as a contender for album of the summer and with the breezy lead track Pumped Up Kicks being played by every DJ on the planet it’s no wonder. Having gained viral recognition last year the band have now been endorsed by MTV, sold out their massive US tour, and sold over 33,000 copies of their debut in it first week in US alone.. With super catchy beats and an electric stage presence this is one not to be missed.

Cited by Bono as Ireland’s “Trailblazers,” the “sophisticated soul boot boys” that are REPUBLIC OF LOOSE make an inaugural trip to Electric Picnic this year. With their reputation as one of Ireland’ greatest live acts, along with the vociferous energy of front man Mik Pyro it is certain that  “Loose! Loose! Loose!” will soon be heard chanted across Stradbally lawns this September.  With a set list comprising of Loose classics such as Shame, Break, The Steady Song, Comeback Girl and their most recent critically acclaimed album Bounce At The Devil. Comeback Girl is also set to be the single release from their digital only compilation of their first 3 albums “Mutant Soul” which is to be released across Europe this August.

Austin-based psychedelic rock band, THE BLACK ANGELS, bring their droning guitars and organ vibrato to the fields of Stradbally. Following on from their debut Passover and Directions To See A Ghost, The Black Angels current album Phosphene Dream produced by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother) has reaped them the most success to date with BBC declaring it the rock album of the year.

Manchester four piece, EVERYTHING EVERYTHING have a lot to celebrate this week with their debut album shortlisted for this years Mercury Music Prize. They are not to be missed at this years’ picnic having captivated audiences all over Europe with their engaging mix of operatic indie and sophisticated electronics.   Described by Q as one of the “brightest new talents” are not to be missed at this years’ picnic. Their debut album ‘Man Alive’ was released in 2010, receiving rave reviews with NME rating the album 8/10 and describing them as “pop’s new Picassos”

The Swedish duo Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf that form NIKI & THE DOVE promise a live show that is nothing short of spectacular. Their debut single  DJ, Ease My Mind, caught the attention of everyone from Artrocker and NME through to The Sunday Times who declared the single and its AA side to “be the two greatest alt-pop songs of 2010”. Their follow up Mother Protect has confirmed Niki & the Dove as the ones to watch of 2011 too.

After garnering widespread acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork and NME to countless indiepop forums, blogs for their 2009 debut, THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART have excelled themselves once more with their stunning follow up Belong. Recorded with the production and mixing team of Flood (Depeche Mode, U2) and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride) Belong has been winning plaudits both in native US and Europe, the band even performed on Letterman earlier this year. Their new single ‘The Body’, out this week, is soon to be a regular at every indie disco in the world and paves the way for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart to being year’s biggest buzz band.

Straight from Limerick’s mean streets, the tracksuit wearing colossus that is THE RUBBERBANDITS return to Electric Picnic with their rip roaring music and comedy adventure.  Since they caused a ruckus at EP last year The Rubberbandits have gone global. They’ve had 100,000 itunes downloads of their single and most tweeted video in the world “Horse Outside”, performed from London to Mullingar to New York and every point in between, picked up an IFTA, recorded their debut album set for release this October and now their brand new MTV show, Guide to New York, has just aired in the US.

DONAL DINEEN’S PARISH Recording Project metamorphised from the now legendary shows he did in the body&soul area at the electric picnics of 2009 & 2010. Those special nights among the trees and under stars brought together the likes of Niwel Tsumbu, Liam O Maonlai, Andre Antunes, Ronan O Snodaigh & Peter Erdei, all of whom joined Donal  at a recording studio in January to go back over some of the ground covered in the course of those two nights as well as generating some new material. The first fruits of those sessions, Hi Five O, was released digitally in June on the Parish Records label & features a guest appearance from Sean Mac Erlaine on bass clarinet.

Following the release of her highly acclaimed debut solo album ‘Dream of You’ SHARON CORR brings her collection of beautifully crafted melodic pop gems to the Picnic for the very first time. Sharon worked with an eclectic range of renowned traditional musicians including Davy Spillane, Máirtín O’Connor and Gerry O’Connor and a thrilling collaboration with the legendary Jeff Beck on Dream of You. Sharon Corr is renowned across the globe as the violinist, songwriter and backing vocalists with her siblings The Corrs.

GHOST ESTATES have been carving out their sound and songs in Dublin since January 2010 since the demise of their two previous bands, the highly charged 3 piece Sickboy and experimental pop sextet 8ball. The band have emerged with their debut self produced 11 track album mixed by Marc Carolan (Muse, Snow Patrol, The Cure)

This Year’s Most Intriguing New Discovery

Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Announces Debut Album

‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’

July 04th 2011

“If his debut album matches the quality of the four tracks found in ‘Pictures’, it will be, quite simply, magnificent” – This Is Fake DIY

“Beautiful” – Sunday Times Culture

“Brit-folk’s pretty new voice” – NME

“A rare talent” – Big Issue

One of the UK’s most exciting new prospects – Benjamin Francis Leftwich is set to release his stunning debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm‘ on July 04th, the album will be preceded by Benjamin’s new single Box Of Stones, which is due for release on June 19th.

At just 21 years of age, Ben’s song writing has a complex quizzical innocence while the songs themselves inspired by a childhood listening to Rolling StonesNina Simone and Bob Dylan, echo the enchanting wordplay of Feist and the delicate elegance of Elliott Smith.

Work on Ben’s debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ started when he was just a teenager and taught himself to play the guitar. Like the previous EPs the album is produced by Ian Grimble (Mumford & SonsManic Street Preachers).  It’s an understated ten track masterpiece that showcases the fragile elegance of Ben’s voice, combined with simple, inviting guitar lines, delicate melodies and poetic lyrics with graceful charm.

The album follows on from the success of 2010‘s ‘A Million Miles Out’ EP and this year’s ‘Pictures’ EP, which have placed him as one of the most exciting upcoming talents in the UK. The success of ‘A Million Miles Out’ led Jo Whiley to invite Ben to play at her ‘Little Noise Session’ gig at the Union Chapel as well as making ‘Atlas Hands’ one of her tracks of 2010. ‘Pictures’ led to backing from Radio 1 and XFM, the title track awarded Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record In The World and invitation to perform on Dermot O’Leary’s Live Sessions. Ben’s cover of Arcade Fire’s ‘Rebellion’ from that session has now been downloaded over 30,000 times.  His online success also includes over 400,000 views to date on YouTube.

Hot Dot: Misterlee

Misterlee's "this disquiet dog"

Misterlee is Lee Boyd Allatson from Leicester. He has been recording and playing in various bands for years but Misterlee is his own avant-garde musical project that infuses intelligent tongue-in-cheek lyrics, sonic experimentation and a few straight-up catchy tracks that prove him to be an underground heavy-weight.

1. Hello Misterlee, please introduce yourself…

Hello Panic Dots! My name is Lee Boyd Allatson and I write, record and perform under the name of Misterlee.

2. Your latest album “this disquiet dog” is out now – how has the response been so far?

In the main, very good, though some folks are still not quite getting it!

Misterlee's "this disquiet dog"

3. The album features a song about Adolf Hitler, dog barks and all sorts of interesting avant-garde goodies… what is the writing process like for you? Do you write with an agenda or is it just from the heart or a bit of both?

The album features a song about someone who thinks they were Adolf Hitler in a past life.

To create something exciting and new, and effectively get to the heart of an idea, you’ve got to use all of the creative tools at your disposal. To know when to hone a concept over time or go with the first gut instinct is all part of that process for me.

3. Will you be playing live at any point?

Possibly. There’s still a lot to do with the album, as everything is worked in-house here. Misterlee has historically been a very live oriented project, so I shall hope to be doing something – just don’t know where or when, or quite how yet…

4. With the trend towards female led indie-pop and/or 80s electro-inspired acts like Delphic being more popular than ever, how do you think Misterlee fits into the scene? And are you bothered about fitting into any scene / genre at all for that matter?

Trends haven’t been relevant to me for some time. I’m more of a style over fashion fellow myself – in it for the long haul. This is far more rewarding for me. I can’t see the point of following a trend when music is such an emotive force. For me, the root of that emotion has to be raw and uncontrived. This is one of the reasons we’re surrounded these days by largely unaffecting music and and are consequently enduring a time of unaffected youth culture.

5. What are you listening to at the moment?

I just set up my old record player at home, so I’m revisiting some old vinyl: Herb Alpert and Harry Belafonte are current favourites – as I slip into semi-retirement!

6. If you could eradicate one type of music / genre / band – tell us who / what?

I couldn’t be so bold! There’s no way I would try and play music God like that. It’s important for the stuff to ‘rage against’ for to exist and get grumpy about!

7. If Misterlee was an ice-cream flavour, which would it be?

Acerbic.

9. The times are a changing and blogs / websites seem to be overtaking the print press – do you still pick up music magazines and if so, what do you read?

Very rarely do I read them to be honest. I’ve always been more of a maker of music than consumer so never really had the need or desire. I guess back in the Melody Maker / NME / Sounds printed paper days I would pick up a copy, but then started their own ‘creation’ of acts, similar to that of the record labels. There were too many column inches to fill with not enough music news to fill them.

10. Finally, what are your plans after this album?

I plan to enjoy a well earned rest!

this disquiet dog is available to buy now from all cool record stores and online outlets…

Wee DVD: Jennifer’s Body

JBHEADER

Jennifer… er she's the hot one right?

Jennifer’s Body packages itself as a slick teen horror, which has been likened to cult high-school movie Heathers. The film was written by it-writer-of-the-moment Diablo Cody (of Juno fame) and, because of this alone, expectations are already high.

The film begins with the haunting words that “hell is a teenage girl” and for anyone who knows or has been a teenage girl, this is quite apt. However, this is the first and only line of the film that makes any sense. The story centres around two best friends – Needy (Amanda Seyfried) and Jennifer (Megan Fox). Jennifer is a stupidly hot cheerleader that likes to swoosh her hair, bare her mid-drift and flirt with boys. Needy is the geeky best friend, the “normal one”, with an akward teenage boyfriend, Chip (Johnny Simmons).

The girls’ problems begin when they both go to their local dive bar to see indie band Low Shoulder. A strange fire engulfs the bar, killing several students of the girls’ school and the band take Jennifer in their van after the show, despite Needy’s attempts to stop them. A few hours later Jennifer shows-up at Needy’s house, bloodied and demonic, puking black bile all over her kitchen floor, but the next day Jennifer appears fine and hotter than ever. It transpires that Low Shoulder took Jennifer, thinking she was a virgin, and sacrificed her to the devil by murdering her in the woods in exchange for fame. The band soon gain the fame they seek and release a single in aid of the tragedy caused by the fire, Jennifer continues to kill boys and eventually Needy has to deal with her herself.

Sounds like a piece of cake right? A simple, tongue-in-cheek, black horror but it’s really not funny, not clever and the paper-thin plot is built-upon extremely shallow teenage stereotypes and a whole lot of empty MTV lingo. The comparison to Heathers would actually be an insult to the 80s cult classic. Heathers was a witty, smartly written film that had depth to its’ characters and a story that intelligently poked fun at those aforementioned high school stereotypes, cliques and teenage popularity.

For a start, the characters in Jennifer’s Body have nothing about them that makes you warm to them or their individual story-lines. There’s actually no reason why Jennifer even entered the band’s van in the first place. After the fire, she stares into the middle distance looking shocked and within a minute is following the band into their van, telling Needy to shut-up. We’re introduced to her character as a confident, takes-no-prisoners type teen vamp, so you’d expect she’d have slightly more balls to at least say no to the van or to compose herself quicker after the fire.

Jennifer’s friendship with Needy is only explained via one hollow memory of two little girls playing with dolls. We never really get an idea why Jennifer is a bully or even if it’s through insecurity or circumstance. We only see Jennifer’s bedroom a few times in the film and her Mother once, at the end. All we gather from those small moments about her character is that Jennifer likes Fall Out Boy (there’s a poster of the band in her room). Jennifer is literally a 2D character built upon pert breasts, a tight midriff and shiny raven-like hair.

How to achieve Hollywood dowdiness – just add glasses… yeah… ok…

So we turn to Needy, the seemingly normal half of the friendship. Here, they’ve used the old Hollywood trick of disguising an attractive girl with glasses and slightly baggy clothes. Unless you’re blind or completely thick, there’s no way unbrushed hair means this character is actually uglier than Jennifer. Needy isn’t quite dorky enough to be bullied, she’s not stupid either and she’s not completely sad. Her character seems to be stuck in “characterless limbo” throughout the whole film.

The band in the film, lead by Nikolai (Adam Brody of The OC fame) doesn’t fit the profile of occultists, murderers or… a band for that matter! The band don’t seem crazy or unhinged enough to be occultists, the only hint you get are some books in their van through a flashback as Jennifer tells Needy what happened to her the night of the fire. They murder her out of the blue thinking she’s a virgin, their reasoning being that they “want to be the guy from Maroon 5″ and gain the fame and fortune they feel they deserve. Any reference to Maroon 5 in a film is an offense. You have permission to fully switch-off from this point on onwards.

Stereotype no. 365 – The Indie band: Always dress in a Strokes-style skinny jacket, quirky shirt and tie. Yawn.

“Do you know how hard it is to make it as an indie band these days? There are so many of us, and we’re all so cute and it’s like if you don’t get on Letterman or some retarded soundtrack, you’re screwed, okay? Satan is our only hope.” – Nikolai’s reason for killing Jennifer. From the sound of fictional band Low Slung’s dull, beige indie tones, we can therefore blame satan for Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Keane too then, right?

In Heathers, we understand why the three Heathers are a clique, we also understand why Veronica (Winona Ryder) has become tired of them. The Heathers are tied together through wealth and social status, Veronica acts as the clique’s lacky, not being quite perfect enough for the Heathers, and grows tired of their ignorance and sexual manipulation – simple. And speaking of sexual manipulation, it’s subtle and does not involve the repeated exposure of bare flesh. Veronica and the Heathers are all equally attractive but the clever casting and script already divides your opinion and you immediately feel Veronica is difference through her less glossy and more adult veneer and conversation. You don’t need obvious symbolism designed for a five-year-old to understand, to show the audience that friends have different personalities.

There are all the MTV stereotypes you can expect in this film – the jock, the emo kid, the slightly sad, fluffy-haired teen boyfriend (Chip) and the “cool” indie band. The soundtrack is like an NME best of; it’s like watching the “How to make a no-brainer film made for dumb teens” guide. You could pick holes in the characters and imagery all day long, but back to the actual story.

We’re told quite early on about a mini “whirlpool” in a nearby river that no one can explain (this is where Jennifer is sacrificed). This is never mentioned again. Halfway through the film you’re also wondering why the fire is not investigated further – who started it? Was it the band? Was it just an accident? When Jennifer starts killing her fellow students, there seems to be a distinct lack of police investigation. Do the police even exist in this world? At least in Heathers, the police intervene and there’s some semblance of an investigation, stupid as they may be, but that just highlights the point Heathers was trying to make about an impressionable, naïve society.

By this point, you’re thinking “Ok, I’ll take this for what it is, a really badly written fictional story that makes no sense”, so they throw in a little bit of lesbian action between Needy and Jennifer just to wake-up the audience. This is never explained, the girls’ strange psychic connection isn’t either and it’s like when Cody was writing this she had a list of teen check-boxes she had to tick and she certainly ticked every single one.

Everytime you feel it’s safe to perhaps just enjoy this film for what it is, you realise once more how awful the writing is and just how stupid Cody assumes her target audience is. Phrases like “You give me such a wettie” and “you’re lime green jello” say nothing about the characters, what the film is trying to say (is it trying to say anything at all?) and aren’t even ironic or funny; you’d probably learn more from a 24-hours Cribs marathon.

Yeah, I'd be pretty pissed too if I'd written a film this bad…

Jennifer’s Body concludes with a plot twist and an ending, which is about as deep as a dried-out kids paddle pool. The film seems to be one long MTV advert sponsored by FHM. If you’ve heard this film is in any way similar to Heathers, what they told you is wrong. Heathers was a witty film that ends with a full bodied conclusion – you’ve learned something about the characters, the main protagonist has grown and you feel her story is complete and it does all this through subtle symbolism and good writing. I can’t see many real film fans enjoying Jennifer’s Body, unless you’re a lobotomised 14-year old MTV loving teen or a horny teenage boy.

When there’s nothing even mildly entertaining about a film, you know it’s a film best left avoided.
