A Very Brief History of Vancouver Breweries

First here’s a quick intro to craft beer in Vancouver. We have to go back to 1982, which really isn’t that long ago, to find where it all started. The manager of Horseshoe Bay’s Troller Pub, John Mitchell and Frank Appleton, a writer for Harrowsmith magazine, felt they didn’t have enough choices when it came to beers and so began to brew their own beer. At that point in time there was no such term as craft beer, what they had just launched was a microbrewery.

As you would expect there weren’t many places to purchase the machinery necessary to make craft beer so they assembled what was needed out of old dairy farming equipment. The Troller Ale House still stands in Horseshoe Bay, albeit in a different location, and Mitchell still drinks there to this day. Appleton went on to consult on other breweries in BC and further down the west coast including Yaletown Brewing, Nelson Brewing, and Deschutes Brewing in Oregon. You can read more about its modern history over on BC Ale Trail.
